The Essence of Worship
Worship is more than music. It is an expression of reverence and adoration towards God. The Bible says, "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." - John 4:24 NKJV.
God is Spirit, and His Holy Spirit lives in us. Hence, worship arises from the spirit. It must align with God’s nature: spiritual and not self-focused or profane.
The Diversity of Christian Music
Christian music comes in many forms, such as rap, heavy metal, and country. However, not all of this music glorifies God. Some musicians may not intend to adore God with their talents.
Many Christian artists enter the industry because they consider themselves Christians, but not all are true followers of Christ. Just because they produce songs labeled as Christian does not mean they bear the fruit of born-again believers.
Worship is meant to be an expression of adoration. So, whom are people worshipping when they sing songs focused on themselves? What do they seek when they hope for awards like an Emmy?
What True Worship Looks Like
The following passages help us identify true worship:
"Come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. – Psalms 95:6 NASB95
"Worship the LORD in holy attire; Tremble before Him, all the earth." – Psalms 96:9 NASB95
"Exalt the LORD our God and worship at His footstool; Holy is He." – Psalms 99:5
Sadly, many worship the work of their hands. The prophet Isaiah warned, "Their land has been filled with idols; They worship the work of their hands, That which their fingers have made." – Isaiah 2:8.
Instead of focusing on God in a sacred space, many congregate in churches and arenas for performances by their favorite Christian bands. Afterward, they seek entertainment in clubs.
The Call to Holiness
We are reminded to pursue holiness. While Apostle Paul stated that all things may be lawful, he emphasized that not all things are helpful. We are temples of the living God, commanded to live differently.
The world idolizes the flesh, money, and fame, but these pursuits are far removed from the true God who grants eternal life.
The Importance of Our Heart
Jesus said, "These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me; And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men." - Matthew 15:8-12 NKJV.
These words challenge us to discern if someone is saying or singing the right things while their heart clings to something other than God.
We should respond using God's Word, led by the Holy Spirit. God declared: "I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people." - 2 Corinthians 6:16.
The Call to Separate
Therefore, God commands us to come out from among the unclean and separate ourselves. He promises to be a Father to us. True worship means to bow down in allegiance to Him.
Many believe they are not engaging in idolatry simply because they don't bow to a physical object. But idolatry is much deeper. Jesus made it clear: love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. When you do this, there is no space to love anything else.
"A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks." - Luke 6:45 NKJV.
A heart that treasures money, fame, fortune, or anything else is bowed to another god.
The Journey of Transformation
Getting sin out of your heart pleases God. Jesus Christ died so you can lead a grace-filled life, not one immersed in sin. However, this does not mean you can eradicate sin without help. The Holy Spirit empowers believers to avoid sin.
Not everyone who says, "Lord, Lord," will enter the kingdom of heaven. It is vital to align ourselves with God's will. Jesus warns, "Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?'" - Matthew 7:21-23 NKJV.
The Importance of Knowing Scripture
Many believers ignore reading their Bibles. They do not study the Word of God. They often lack a clear understanding of what they believe. Many assume that a simple confession of faith guarantees salvation.
However, scripture clarifies this: "that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." - Romans 10:9-10.
True faith involves not only confession but belief that Jesus is Lord, your supernatural Master. This means relinquishing your self-ownership to God through Jesus.
Changes Brought by Love
When you have the love of God in your heart, certain changes will follow:
You will stop drinking.
You will cease engaging in premarital sex.
Your speech will transform; you'll eliminate cursing as your words honor God.
You will turn away from lying and cheating.
Ephesians chapter four, starting at verse seventeen, illustrates the contrast between the old self and the new creation in Christ.
In conclusion, as we worship, may our hearts truly reflect our love and allegiance to God. The essence of worship is found in a sincere heart and genuine relationship with Him. Listening to this calling can lead you to a life of holiness and obedience.
Let's pray,
Holy Father God, I confess my sin to you, the sin of idolatry. I have put things before You at times, not realizing I was worshipping those things. I ask forgiveness for the times I did this and the times I sang songs without a genuine heart of worship. Thank You for softening my heart in these areas. In Jesus' name, Amen.
