The Battle in the Mind: Where Warfare Really Begins

“With the Lord’s authority I say this: Live no longer as the Gentiles do, for they are hopelessly confused. Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him. They have no sense of shame. They live for lustful pleasure and eagerly practice every kind of impurity.”   — Ephesians 4:17–19 NLT

There are people who operate in spiritual apathy—callous, unfeeling, and disconnected from the life God gives. Because of the condition of their hearts, they give themselves over as prey to the devil with unbridled sensuality and cravings for every kind of impurity their desires demand.

We are warned to beware of the schemes of the enemy because he roams like a roaring lion, looking for someone to destroy, kill, or steal from.

But Paul reminds us that “You did not learn Christ in this way…”   — Ephesians 4:20–24 AMP

If we have truly heard Him and been taught by Him, then truth requires that we put off our old self—discarding our former nature—and be continually renewed in the spirit of our mind. We put on the new self, the regenerated nature created in God’s image, expressing righteousness, holiness, and gratitude for our salvation.

Discerning Spiritual vs. Fleshly Thinking

Discerning spiritual thinking from fleshly thinking requires a new way of thinking. When we are submitted to the Holy Spirit and His ways, we will not submit to the ways of our flesh. This means our desires and preferences get put aside for God’s desires. This can only happen when we are born again.

Once we are truly convicted that we are sinners in need of Jesus Christ to atone for those sins, we can begin a faith-filled journey that results in a new way of life.

How Thoughts Become Strongholds

When we live with repetitive patterns of thinking, they become our perception for everything. These thoughts get locked into our beliefs and begin to rule our actions.

A stronghold can be referred to as a mindset—a fixed state of mind or mental attitude. Without behavior modification, a person will remain stuck in a way of thinking. Everyone should be flexible, but never at the expense of truth.

Some strongholds involve expectations attached to a person’s thinking. These expectations shape a certain way of thinking that becomes difficult to break free from.

A Practical Example

A person may develop a stronghold after receiving a bad report. When a doctor gives a diagnosis along with his opinion of the outcome, we often hear the words and receive the curse instead of trusting in the Lord’s outcome. We begin to believe we are facing odds that cannot change. Once we grab that thought, we begin to build on it.

But Scripture says:

“The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, and a good report makes the bones healthy.”   — Proverbs 15:30

A good report strengthens us, but when we receive bad news and focus on it, our souls become burdened to the point of sickness. The things we look at—or look toward—can bring health or sickness. Looking toward Jesus during a crisis and relying on His strength is the best way to overcome a defeated mindset.

Philippians 4:8 tells us how we should think: whatever is true, noble, just, pure, lovely, and of good report—this is the pattern for our thoughts.

Breaking Mental Agreements with Darkness

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”  — 2 Cor 10:3–5 NKJV

Breaking mental agreements with darkness is spiritual warfare. We pull down strongholds, cast down arguments, and bring every thought into obedience.

Renewing the Mind Is Warfare

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”   — Romans 12:2 NKJV

Renewing the mind is not a casual suggestion—it is warfare. It is the daily discipline of rejecting the world’s patterns and embracing God’s truth so we can discern His perfect will.

In practical terms, we renew our minds when we refuse to allow thoughts to linger in our mind.

  • We stop thoughts at their source.

  • If they are coming from an old way of thinking we choose to think on Jesus' terms and not our flesh.

  • If they are coming from an exteral source like the enemy, we command them to leave.

  • We must speak outloud when taking authority over demonic voices as they cannot read your mind and your words hold power when they come from the Holy Spirit.

Hopefully you get some help for the battle in your mind and obtain the victory Jesus died for.

Let's pray,

Heavenly Father, thank You for the power I have in Your Holy Spirit that leads me into all truth. I have believed the lies being tossed in to my mind and am ready to wage war against them. I break agreement with every word spoken by anyone, including myself, that has bound me to the lies of the enemy. I take my thoughts captive and delcare the goodness of God into them all. In Jesus name, Amen
